PITTSBURGH
WASHINGTON
On Wednesday, the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said it was considering the removal of a number of prescription drugs from the market.
In its announcement Thursday, the agency said it believed that the drug's use in the treatment of chronic pain and other conditions was "a significant safety concern."
In its decision, HHS said that it considered the effectiveness of three drugs in treating high blood pressure and pulmonary edema. The drugs also reduced the risk of stroke by about 1.4 per cent. It said that the drugs also may have a positive effect on the risk of certain types of cancer, including breast cancer, and a reduction in the risk of breast cancer by about 0.5 per cent.
The drug had been listed on the market under the brand name Viagra and the brand name Cialis, with a generic version available as Cialis 10 mg tablets.
In addition, the agency said that it was taking "significant steps" to ensure that the drugs were no longer used to treat the severe forms of cancer. The drugs should also be available under the brand name, Viagra, with a generic version available as Viagra 5 mg tablets.
HHS said it was considering these actions in light of concerns about the drug's safety and the drug's impact on the patient's mental state.
"I believe that the safety and effectiveness of these drugs has not been understudied, and I do believe that this is a significant concern," said Acting HHS Secretary Michael J. Givers for a news release from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
The drugs were not included in the drug prescription information or in the FDA's drug safety data for other prescription drugs, HHS said.
The drug companies said they expected these drugs to be removed from the market by a "black box" warning that could be read at a health care provider's website.
On Thursday, HHS said it had identified a number of prescription drugs that were being discontinued from the market, including two of the drugs in question.
"There is no question that these drugs are very important to the patient's well-being," HHS said in a news release.
In addition, the agency said that it would consider a new safety information sheet, which will be available to the public at a later date, in its official announcement. The agency would also take other actions, including advising the public of the increased risks of heart problems, stroke, and certain types of cancer, including breast cancer and prostate cancer.
Last year, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received reports of people taking the drugs as well as other reports of serious adverse events, including suicide and death. The reports are now being considered, and the agency will continue to monitor them.
